These carrier oils are cold pressed from vegetables, nuts or seeds to ensure that their individual properties and therapeutic qualities are preserved. Because of their purity they contain many nutrients to nourish the skin. These oils will make the perfect base to create your own aromatherapy massage oils and skin care.
These carrier oils are the ideal base oil for massage. Pure essential oils are too strong to apply directly to the skin. Carrier oils, otherwise known as base oils, 'carry' the essential oil into the skin of the body. Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils so that they may be massaged into the body to receive the beneficial effect of the essential oil. The role of carrier oil is to assist in the absorption of essential oil into the body.
When storing carrier oils it is best to keep them refrigerated until you’re ready to use them. Another good tip is to mix only small amounts of essential oils at a time, and use them quickly. You only need about 5 to 6 drops of essential oil to 10mls of carrier massage oil.
There are a range of different carrier oils used in aromatherapy treatments, each with their own individual properties and therapeutic benefits. The carrier oils most frequently utilised in essential oil aromatherapy blends are sweet almond, jojoba, apricot kernel, and sesame oil with sweet almond being the most popular. Small amounts of avocado, borage seed, carrot, calendula, camellia, evening primrose, flaxseed, macadamia, sesame, and rose hip seed oil can also be added to enhance the blends.
